BDS Short Message & Tiantong Satellite Antennas

Integrated Tx/Rx antennas for BeiDou RDSS short message communication and Tiantong handheld satellite comms. L-band uplink, S-band downlink, RHCP/LHCP, up to 10 W transmit, IP67.

Application Overview

Why Satellite Messaging Antennas Are Built Differently

BDS short-message service (RDSS) is unique to BeiDou: a bidirectional satellite messaging capability that covers regions where cellular infrastructure is absent or unreliable — open ocean, remote border areas, high-altitude terrain, and forward operating environments. Antennas that serve RDSS must handle simultaneous L-band uplink transmission (around 1615 MHz) and S-band downlink reception (around 2491 MHz) without the two modes interfering — a design constraint that goes well beyond standard navigation antennas.

The GNSource BDS messaging line pairs dedicated helicals (TDXL-HB410 for S-band receive, TDXL-HB420 for L-band transmit with 10 W capability) with integrated combined antennas (BLS3001, BLS4001/4002, CZBLS4003) that collapse navigation + messaging into a single enclosure and single coax feed — ideal for maritime, vehicular, and aviation installations where cabling complexity is the constraint. The TDXL-SH166 handheld spiral integrates RHCP navigation and short-message reception with LHCP messaging uplink in a 100 g package.

The Tiantong TDXL-S1505 is a separate product line — S-band mobile satellite voice/data, not RDSS. Four-arm spiral, LHCP, ≤2 dB axial ratio, and 20 g weight make it suitable for handheld terminals operating over the Tiantong constellation. Note that RDSS and Tiantong services each require separate network authorization from the Chinese operator; GNSource supplies the antenna hardware only.

Key Specifications to Consider

  • Tx Power

Standalone Tx helicals support 10 W; integrated variants ship with ~5 W PA.

  • Tx/Rx Isolation

Combined antennas need ≥15 dB L↔S isolation to avoid self-jamming.

  • Axial Ratio

≤3 dB keeps cross-polar loss manageable on both links.

  • Connector & Feedline

TNC-KF waterproof for outdoor vehicle and marine installs.

  • Multi-Band Support

Single antenna handling B1I/B1C/B3I/L/S eliminates multiple antennas.

Flagship All-in-One

TDXL-CZBLS4003 — Complete BDS Terminal with Integrated LNA and PA

The TDXL-CZBLS4003 is a complete BDS short message and navigation terminal in a single enclosure — receiving B1/B2b/B3 navigation signals and S-band downlink messages while transmitting L-band uplink at up to 36 dBm (≈4 W) saturated output. The symmetric offset-feed antenna design stabilizes phase center and minimizes installation error, while the integrated pre-cavity filter enhances interference rejection in crowded RF environments. Smart power management disables the transmit amplifier when not in use, reducing power draw. Single-cable output combines RF signal transmission and DC power through one TNC-KF waterproof connector, simplifying vehicle and vessel installation. Suitable for marine, vehicular, and shipborne platforms requiring long-term outdoor deployment.

FAQ

BDS Short Message FAQs

Answers to common questions about BDS RDSS service, Tiantong, Tx power, and combining navigation with short-message in a single antenna.

What's the difference between BDS short-message (RDSS) and Tiantong mobile satcom?

BDS RDSS (Radio Determination Satellite Service) operates on L-band transmit (1615 MHz) and S-band receive (2491 MHz) for two-way short messages via BeiDou satellites — a China-controlled service with unique coverage. Tiantong is a separate Chinese mobile-satellite system at 1980–2010 / 2170–2200 MHz for voice and broader data. TDXL-S1505 supports Tiantong; TDXL-SH166, HB410/420, and the BLS / CZBLS series target BDS RDSS.

What transmit power do BDS L-band antennas support?

TDXL-HB420 handles 10 W LHCP transmit for BDS L-band RDSS uplink. Integrated CZBLS vehicle-mounted variants — CZBLS4001, CZBLS4003, CZBLS4006 — include approximately 5 W power amplifier in a single enclosure with TNC-KF waterproof interface, simplifying platform integration.

Is BDS short-message service available outside China?

BeiDou short message is a China-operated satellite service; regional availability depends on satellite coverage and local regulatory clearance. BDS-3 extends global short-message coverage with service-level limitations — consult the BeiDou service operator (China Satellite Navigation Office) for availability, terminal authorization, and pricing in your target region. GNSource supplies the antenna hardware; service provisioning is separate.

Can one antenna combine BDS navigation and short-message in a single cable?

Yes. TDXL-SH166, TDXL-CZBLS4003, and the BLS4001 / BLS4002 series integrate BDS B1I / B1C / B3I navigation reception with L-band transmit and S-band receive for short messages — a single antenna, single cable, and single connector to the terminal. This simplifies cabling on maritime, vehicular, and handheld platforms.
